Our Mission
The Haven at Skanda is a nonprofit farm that takes in rescued farm animals from all over the country and helps them heal from abuse and neglect – helping them get physically well, and helping them to relax, feel safe, and emerge as who they really are. We also support several families of endangered breeds. The animals are beautifully able to let go of trauma and live in the present moment as their pure, innocent, loving selves. In this way, they become loving role models, showing us what is possible. Skanda believes we have much to learn from animals, and offers programs that offer people the chance to experience the animals and discover love, hope, and possibilities. The Haven at Skanda is deeply invested in supporting children and young people as they connect with animals, nature, and community and become responsible stewards and visionary leaders.
Cost: $10 per Girl Scout
Program Duration: 2-3 Hours
Daisies visiting Skanda will have the opportunity to observe the rescued and endangered animals on the farm, including goats, horses, pigs, miniature donkeys, chickens, and ducks. Skanda will provide an animal observation game. Daisies will have the opportunity to focus their attention on one specific animal, getting to know them better.
Cost: $10 per Girl Scout
Program Duration: 2-3 Hours
Juniors can use Skanda’s Vegetable and Herb Garden for the Animals as a site for learning about gardening, including exploring and potentially modifying its design (created by a Fayetteville Girl Scout Troop in 2022), researching the plants that best benefit the animals of Skanda, and even planting and tending the garden.
Cost: $10 per Girl Scout
Program Duration: 2-3 Hours
Cadettes visiting Skanda will have the opportunity to meet the animals, learn about some of the ways the animals help people emotionally and the lessons they teach us about friendship, generosity, and appreciation for diversity. Cadettes will have the opportunity to help the animals of Skanda with a volunteer activity that might include brushing them, cleaning their living areas, feeding them, or giving them love and attention. They may also have the opportunity learn how to help the animals of Skanda through special projects, fundraisers, or advocacy.
Cost: $10 per Girl Scout
Program Duration: 2-3 Hours
Seniors interested in learning about the complexities of the way humans interact with and treat animals can meet the rescued and endangered animals of Skanda, learn about some of their experiences with being rescued and recovering from abuse and neglect, and learn how others have become endangered. Some of the rescued animals of Skanda have come from sport settings, and others from commercial/factory farming. Skanda staff can assist with resources for becoming an advocate for animals.

Girl Scout Daisies and Brownies will be empowered to become their most confident, best selves and have a strong foundation for life with our interactive, self-paced mini lessons. Our program is designed for Girl Scout troops to self-guide through our 15-minute lessons per week over the course of 6 weeks. These hands-on, thought-provoking, self-reflection activities are a great way to start or end your troop meetings. Girls can then practice the skills between meetings. Girl Scouts will learn ways to foster: a growth mindset, more happiness, resilience, and ways to be calm every day. This course merges the butterfly life cycle with critical social emotional learning tools. Girl Scouts can have more fun with the included Be Present to Catch Happinessgame. And the Daily Habits with the Bright Butterfly (a habit tracker included in the course) encourages them to have good habits for life. Most of the tools and techniques they will learn are backed by science and all of the information is delivered in engaging activities.

The mission of the CNY Diaper Bank is to ensure that all CNY families have access to an adequate supply of diapers for their babies and toddlers, and to build awareness in our community that diapers are a basic human need not being met for all children. Our volunteer-run organization was founded in 2016 to assist low-income families with diapers. Diapers are not covered by WIC or SNAP benefits and 1 out of 2 children in Syracuse are living below the poverty line. We work with 50 local partners to pair diapers with critical services for families to access and to encourage them to engage with these beneficial programs. Our partners include food pantries, healthcare clinics, community action partnerships and church outreach programs.
Since 2016, over 8 million diapers have been distributed and we reach 3,500+ babies every single month. We are the only source of emergency diapers in CNY and we provide the only basic need that is not supported by safety net programs.
Volunteers are essential to our success. They are pivotal in organizing diaper drives in the community and also come into our facility to help wrap diapers for distribution. Diapers are distributed in Onondaga, Madison, Cortland, and Seneca counties. The facility is located in Onondaga County.

Our Mission
The Haven at Skanda is a nonprofit farm that takes in rescued
farm animals from all over the country and helps them heal from abuse
and neglect – helping them get physically well, and helping them to
relax, feel safe, and emerge as who they really are. We also support
several families of endangered breeds. The animals are beautifully
able to let go of trauma and live in the present moment as their pure,
innocent, loving selves. In this way, they become loving role models,
showing us what is possible. Skanda believes we have much to learn
from animals, and offers programs that offer people the chance to
experience the animals and discover love, hope, and possibilities.
The Haven at Skanda is deeply invested in supporting children and
young people as they connect with animals, nature, and community and
become responsible stewards and visionary leaders.

BB Guns (Ages 8-12)
The BB rifles used have an upgraded barrel and target sight, which increases accuracy. The youth shoot at a distance of five meters at the NRA BB Gun target. All four positions are taught (prone, sitting, kneeling and standing). In the process of practicing, the shooters earn NRA Qualification patches and awards for BB gun. There are also opportunities to enter monthly matches. A parent is required to stay with the youth.
Air Riffles (Ages 12-18)
It is divided into two categories. The first is “Sporter”. We use the Crossman Challenger PCP air rifle, which is very accurate. The second category is “Precision”, which is what you see in the Olympics. The youth shoot at a distance of 10 meters at the NRA AR-5/10 target. Your goal is to hit the pencil dot!! All three positions are taught (prone, kneeling and standing). In the process of practicing, the shooters earn NRA Qualification patches and awards for air rifle. There are also opportunities to enter monthly matches. A parent is required to stay with the youth.
Air Pistols (Ages 12-18)
There are four different styles of air pistols to use. The targets are shot at a distance of 10 meters. Youth follow the NRA Qualification program that involves shooting seated, standing supported and non-supported, two-handed and one-handed. Participants earn Qualification patches and awards. There are opportunities to enter monthly matches. A parent is required to stay with the youth.

Volunteers can help with a variety of tasks including helping to groom the animals, clean their living spaces, feed them, and spend time loving them. Activities can be gentle, moderately physically engaging, or physically challenging, depending on what is the best fit for each volunteer.
Some volunteer activities are:
Badge Opportunities
Daisy Animal Observer
Cost: $10 per Girl Scout
Program Duration: 2-3 Hours
Daisies visiting Skanda will have the opportunity to observe the rescued and endangered animals on the farm, including goats, horses, pigs, miniature donkeys, chickens, and ducks. Skanda will provide an animal observation game. Daisies will have the opportunity to focus their attention on one specific animal, getting to know them better.
Junior Gardener
Cost: $10 per Girl Scout
Program Duration: 2-3 Hours
Juniors can use Skanda’s Vegetable and Herb Garden for the Animals as a site for learning about gardening, including exploring and potentially modifying its design (created by a Fayetteville Girl Scout Troop in 2022), researching the plants that best benefit the animals of Skanda, and even planting and tending the garden.
Cadette Animal Helper
Seniors Voice for Animals:
Cost: $10 per Girl Scout
Program Duration: 2-3 Hours
Seniors interested in learning about the complexities of the way humans interact with and treat animals can meet the rescued and endangered animals of Skanda, learn about some of their experiences with being rescued and recovering from abuse and neglect, and learn how others have become endangered. Some of the rescued animals of Skanda have come from sport settings, and others from commercial/factory farming. Skanda staff can assist with resources for becoming an advocate for animals.
